Buyers Still Feel Stuck, But Sentiment Is Shifting

The sentiment is getting better….67% of Americans say now is a bad time to buy a house, and that has now been true for five straight years.
That is the headline number from Gallup’s annual Economy and Personal Finance poll, fielded April 1 to 15, 2026. Only 29% of Americans say it is a good time to buy. To put that in context, Gallup has been asking this same question since 1978, and for most of the last 40 years a solid majority of Americans were positive on the homebuying market. The line on this chart did not cross above 50% bad-time until the late 2010s.
